Ah, the age old question no one thinks they’ll ever have to ask… until they do.
You’re probably thinking, “Easy peasy - archiving just hides the post, right? You can bring it back whenever you want!” That’s what I thought too. Cue dramatic music.
Let me take you on a little journey I like to call:
How I Almost Got Roasted Alive by Instagram and My Entire Team.
A few weeks ago, a client called in a panic - their reel needed to be “updated ASAP.” I, naturally, entered full fight or flight mode. My immediate reaction? Archive it. Done. Problem solved. I rang the creative team, gave my royal decree (because obviously, I’m a Meta QUEEN 👑), and the reel was swiftly archived.
So far, so good.
Then cames plot twist #1 - I didn’t ask what needed updating. Tiny detail, right? WRONG. Turns out, the change was just in the caption. Yep. That could’ve been fixed faster than you can say engagement drop.
So I called our creative superstar to unarchive the post. Easy fix. Or so I thought.
Cue plot twist #2:
Instagram says: “Original Audio can’t be found.”
My brain says: “This is fine.”
My soul says: “Goodbye, cruel world.”
This was talking to camera content - aka, no original audio = no post. And Tiff was ready to (politely) murder me. I sat frozen in dread, wondering if this would be the moment my career ended.
Enter Lil, our creative wizard, who calmly (but with just enough sass) swooped in and saved my life. Ten minutes later, we had the audio back, the post live, and I only had mild trauma.
So what’s the lesson here, folks?
Here are my top tips to avoid spiralling into the same shame spiral:
1. Ask the actual question: What exactly needs updating? Caption vs content = two VERY different vibes.
2. Don’t assume you’re smarter than Meta. None of us are. It’s a mysterious beast. Take your time, double-check, then proceed.
3. Phone a friend. Talk to your team. Someone always knows more than you (and might just save your butt when it all goes south).
4: How did we fix it? Lil hit the classic IT move — turned her computer off and on again, gave it another shot at unarchiving, and BAM… she pulled off a miracle and saved the day like the legend she is #thanksreddit. 💥🙌
At the end of the day, mistakes happen - but don’t let panic drive your decisions. Take a breath. Then maybe take another one. And if there’s talking to camera content involved? Maybe… just maybe… don’t archive it. Unless you like chaos, mild heart attacks, and writing blog posts like this one. 😂
